Priene was a city built on the slope of Mt Mycale near the Gulf of Latmia.
It seems to have been a colony of Thebes, its founders being Aepytus, son of Neleus, and Philotas of Thebes.
A member of the Panionion, the city reached its prime in the 6th century BC,
when Bias of Priene, one of the Seven Sages of Greece, appears to have been the civic leader.
